Opportunity to deepen French language studies brings Sprungers to France—and one step closer to the Yalunka people

After studying French for 14 months in the city of Dakar, Michael and Jenn Sprunger were ready to join our team in Kedougou, Senegal in January 2015 and dive into learning the Yalunka language. Recent reports from the field, however, led them to a different destination—one that will actually build a stronger foundation in their language studies and save them a lot of frustration down the road. “As the rest of our team has been learning the Yalunka language,” says Hal Lehman, international church multiplication director, “we’ve discovered that a deeper knowledge of French would actually be extremely helpful in working through the intricacies of the local language with our tutors—or ‘nurturers,’ as we call them.”

That decision has landed the Sprungers in France for an extended course of study for the next four months. “This foundation will launch them ahead of where they would have been in learning the Yalunka language,” says Hal. Michael agrees. “We’re definitely excited for the opportunity,” he says. “It’s been very challenging, but we’re growing in our French and are excited to join the FEC team at the end of this course of study.”
