Even before arriving here, we knew that we would need to look for some type of business or work opportunity that would establish us here long term, something that would be valuable to the community, contribute to our financial support and help us continually meet new people and focus on relationships.

One of the best ways we can serve and make a difference in Basque culture is through English learning opportunities. We have found that while there are lots of English academies here, there aren’t a lot of teachers who really truly care for their students and desire to see them improve their English. So, we have been involved teaching English and really caring for people in this area.

But we have also found that helping connect people between American culture and Basque culture also leads to this sort of amazing relational and learning experience. It allows Americans to learn about Basque culture and also be able to truly care about a student and truly help them improve their English.

These experiences have been amazing. As one of the host dads said, “It was like the whole time was anointed.” All the students and families connected incredibly well. There were many emotions and tears when the students left, and many seeds were planted in their hearts and minds as they observed and talked with host families and others about personal faith in God and how it affects their lives.

Basque students who have done these summer English learning trips are amazed by how welcoming and warm the people are, especially at church.

For us, these experiences have been an amazing opportunity to show God’s love to students from the Basque Country. We will continue to pursue these opportunities as God allows.
