Psalm 78 speaks of the amazing things God has done, urging us to “tell the next generation.” That mission is the heart of the FEC Bible Quizzing program, a competitive Bible-memorizing program for 7th through 12th grade students. Their third and final Quiz-Off took place in April which brought 12 FEC churches and over 200 students to Grace Church in Morton, Illinois.
Starting in September, students study a designated portion of scripture, diving deep, asking questions, and committing God’s word to memory. Quiz-Offs take place at Miracle Camp, Taylor University, and Grace Church, giving students a chance to compete with other teams in FEC and connect with the “Big Church.”
One former quizzer, Jaime Farrell, still recalls scripture she studied decades ago that comforts and guides her today. After graduating, Jaime continued to help in various roles with quizzing and eventually took over as the coordinator when Bruce Rocke retired in 2024. Jaime knows the incredible impact this ministry is having on students. “It’s getting students to learn God’s word, to love God’s word and to live God’s word,” she says. “I love the competitive part, but it’s also encouraging and filled with joy.”
Teams can be asked general questions about scripture, reference location questions, or to finish the end of specific verses. No matter their level of participation, students are spending valuable time studying God’s word and growing relationships. One student named Faith testified how she saw the verses as just words at first, but as she studied Paul’s letter, she saw the way he applied his own words in how he lived his life. She started to understand the depth of meaning in scripture and it has brought peace in times of fear, anxiety, or temptation in her life.
One quizzing parent saw her child grow in spiritual maturity out of a difficult season because of her time in quizzing. “As a parent there are few things more powerful than hearing your child say that God’s word changed their life.”
