Interns wear many hats in service to the church, but their impact goes far beyond the day-to-day work. This summer, over 30 interns worked in FEC churches across the country, helping in areas like youth, worship, pastoral, or hospitality ministry. Many of these young people are high school graduates or college students.

Jared Mehrle, Director of Church Planting at FEC, spent time with several interns and residents this summer in places like Synergy Ohio East and Kings Cross in Lyons, Kansas. Residents differ from interns by entering a one- to two-year residency program under the mentorship of a pastor or leader.

As Jared met with various interns, he saw the work God was doing in their lives. “I think internships can be one of the best things for your church. It raises up new leaders and is so important for the church’s sustained health through the next generation.”

Not only do the interns provide support to the church, but Jared also witnessed the “boost of excitement” present when a church has enthusiastic young people serving in those capacities. One young woman interning in Ohio appreciated having that time to experience ministry before committing her life to full-time missionary service.

FEC facilitates these programs, but each church adapts them to its own vision and direction. For example, Kingdom Collective in Fort Wayne, Indiana, allows interns to work across all fields of ministry, thereby gaining experience in many areas of service.
