In 2020, when churches sought new ways to minister to their communities during the pandemic, LIFEGATE Church in Denver, Colorado, launched a back-to-school Summer Bash for families under financial hardship. Five years later, that same Summer Bash has continued to grow, seeing more than 1500 backpacks given away and thousands of people impacted.
At the heart of the initiative is the “dignity of choice,” says Campus Pastor of Formation, Lis Cheesman. Students may select from a wall of backpacks, giving them the freedom to choose their favorite color or style. Other stations at Summer Bash are equipped with folders, pencils, notebooks, and various other supplies from which they may choose. The event has grown to include food, drinks, and free haircuts from barbers and hairstylists.
By offering choices, Lis sees this as “living in a state of trust versus suspicion.” Many who visited the event were non-English speakers, particularly Muslims. This event gave LIFEGATE congregants a chance to connect and invite them to join LIFEGATE’s English Language Center, which teaches English classes twice a week.
Lis says a highlight is “seeing relationships being built between our church and community.” The event goes beyond giving free school supplies, says Lis. “It’s to love people well.”
One year, a single mom of six walked from her neighboring home to attend Summer Bash with her children. She has since stepped forward to proclaim her faith by getting baptized at LIFEGATE. Another time at Summer Bash, a father visited and wept with gratitude. After losing his job, this gave him the chance to bring home brand-new school supplies, and for his children to see their dad as their provider.
More than 200 volunteers served at Summer Bash in 2025, distributing supplies, assisting with a festival, and making new connections. Lis knows this event ultimately rests in God’s hands, right down to the number of resources donated. “Every year, we see the Lord provide. There is always enough.”
