In 1896, the Kings, a Christ-following husband and wife, donated 100 acres of Illinois countryside to start an orphanage. Nearly 130 years later, Salem4Youth is still going strong with the same Christ-centered focus, now reaching teen boys and their families for Christ. The ranch offers a one-year program for young men to receive a Christian education, biblical counseling, and vocational training.
Last August, Andrew Held, one of Salem4Youth’s biblical counselors, stepped in as interim executive director during a leadership transition. This role became permanent in December. Having a heart for youth ministry since getting saved, Andrew has served teens since 2008, creating and facilitating community programs for at-risk youth.
Andrew felt called to join the team at Salem4Youth in 2021 and has served in various roles ever since. Today, being executive director means he encourages and builds up his staff, connects with the teens through counseling or mentorship, and reaches out to communities and churches for support and partnerships. “God has been faithful in bringing ‘called people’ to Salem who are committed to the cause of Christ and sharing the gospel and gospelizing young men.”
Although each student attends formal biblical counseling sessions on the ranch, much of the work and healing happens during the hands-on activities. Three vocational classes are available to teach practical skills–equine training (working with horses), photography, and woodworking. “A lot of the issues of the heart come out during those times,” Andrew says. “They open up a lot while they’re sanding or cutting wood.” Witnessing breakthroughs like this always inspires Andrew and his team. “When we see God move and see him change the heart of a young man, that makes it all worth it. It solidifies what God is calling us to do.”
According to Salem4Youth’s website, “The founders believed and modeled that if Christ was the key…then Salem4Youth Ranch would be able to serve and always meet the needs of the children placed in its care.” Andrew sees this as God’s continual vision for the future.
