People from Spanish-speaking countries make up nearly 20% of the United States population as the largest minority group (cnn.com). Life Community Church in Hilliard, Ohio, is building a bridge to the Hispanic community around them in two ways, by becoming a multicultural church and by hosting an independent Spanish-speaking congregation in their building.
Life Community Church (LCC) leaders desired to become a multicultural church, even strategizing about how to create it. For two years, Lead Pastor Dan Burmeister and a church member, Armando Lezcano, had been praying and dreaming about that vision. Then, when the Covid-19 pandemic quarantine forced closures, God used an online meeting platform and Armando to grow a Spanish-speaking ministry. Today, Spanish-speaking people who attend LCC have an opportunity to hear the sermon in Spanish and to worship in both English and Spanish.
On December 12, 2021, LCC joined with CenterPoint Church, a Spanish-speaking community that meets in their building, to celebrate their unity. This wasn’t the first time that the churches have worshiped in a combined service, desiring to live out Ephesians 2:14-15 and create one group from the two. The worship was led by a combined team from LCC and CenterPoint, and four leaders shared the platform on the topic of unity: LCC Lead Pastor Dan Burmeister, Armando Lezcano, CenterPoint Pastor Juan Ramone Zarate, and Albert Newell. Pastor Dan Burmeister said, “We get to show that we are one. Jesus prayed for us to be one that the world would know the gospel. It’s a testimony of the gospel.”
As LCC continues to build bridges with the Hispanic community in Hilliard, Dan emphasizes that the church leaders are asking, “How do we need to change to become this one church that God is calling us to be? How do we blend cultures?”
