Language and culture can be a barrier to sharing the gospel. No one knows that better than Hugo Reyes who is leading a community of Hispanic people at Pine Hills Church and bridging the cultural and language barrier that once existed there. He said, “If we remove the language barrier, we have a whole new group of people that we can reach with the gospel.” Hispanic people make up almost 10% of the Fort Wayne area population.
At 15 years old, Hugo had sensed God’s call to be a pastor, but after high school, he studied Electronic Engineering at a university and began working in Caracas. While in Caracas, he began attending a church that FEC missionaries had planted, and he met FEC missionaries from Fort Wayne, Harry and Lynnette Hyde. In 2015, he moved to California to attend West Coast Baptist College and prepare for the pastoral ministry.
In 2020, Hugo attended the Church Planters Assessment Center (CPAC) and FEC Orientation where he met Pine Hills Multiplication Executive Colleen Senestraro and Lead Pastor Mike Drury. They invited him to join their residency program in Fort Wayne, and he moved to Fort Wayne in February, 2021.
In the summer of 2021, he began connecting with the Hispanic people who attended Pine Hills, and by August, they decided to explore the idea of launching a Spanish-speaking ministry: Pine Hills en Espanol. On December 5, they launched their first gathering, and they will continue meeting each month on the third Sunday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. for community, worship, and teaching–all in Spanish.
